ABSTRACT

The circular economy (CE) is a contemporary concept that includes the use of renewable materials and technologies, making sustainability an important part of corporate management. The paper deals with issues related to the current state of learning and management of the application of circular economy concepts—CE. The main purpose of this work is to identify both the interest of industries in the CE field in terms of the principles of eco-design and eco-innovation of sustainable industrial products, as well as the approach and development of the concept during the pandemic period. The authors performed a scientometric analysis in the Web of Science (WOS) database for the CE field, having two search criteria: sustainability and eco-design. As a result, 66 publications from the last five years were retained. Given the higher number of publications in the last three years, CE was found to be a topical area. Out of the 66 publications, using the PRISMA diagram, the authors identified the eligible articles, excluding 15 of them as being only tangential to the CE field and not applied in the industry. Depending on the high frequency of certain keywords, the authors identified three important directions for the CE approach that corroborate and interpret the results obtained: M—management (1);P—packing (2);and L—Learning (3). Following this approach, the authors determined the focus of the manufacturing industries in terms of applying the concepts and principles of CE, thus being able to contribute to the creation of eco-innovation and eco-design practices of industrial products, especially industrial packaging. The paper will also be beneficial for Ph.D. students who show a certain interest in CE and will help develop the following research directions in this field.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore, after the epidemic, the intelligent traffic management system, which is the key to creating a green leisure tourism environment in the move towards sustainable urban development. First, quantitative research, snowballing, and convenience sampling methods are used to analyze 750 questionnaires with a basic statistical test, t-test, ANOVA test, and the Pearson product–moment correlation coefficient (PPMCC) method. Qualitative research and a semi-structured interview method are used to collect the opinions of six experts on the data results. Finally, the results are discussed with the multivariate inspection method. Although the current electric bicycle system is convenient, the study found that the service quality of the airport is sufficient;that the fare of the subway is low and popular with students if the system can ease the crowd during peak hours;and that the login and security check time can be shortened, which can help improve the operating convenience of the system interface and link the information of leisure and tourism activities. On the other hand, adjusting fares, increasing seats, planning for women-only ticketing measures and travel space, providing disinfection or cleaning facilities in public areas, and improving passenger’s public health literacy and epidemic prevention cooperation will further enhance the student travel experience, improve the smart city and green tourism network, and help achieve sustainable urban tourism.

[...]these benefits remain unevenly distributed between and within countries, often leading to natural resource exploitation, habitat loss, and even species extinction, while poorer or marginalized communities across the rural-urban continuum are regularly alienated from decision making processes. [...]these developments frequently occur against the backdrop of weak governance, institutional bureaucratic backlogs, operational silos, and lack of transparency and accountability. The continuing COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in an estimated 3.2% contraction of the global economy in 2020 and according to the World Health Organization has so far claimed over 5.78 million lives, has further spotlighted the stark geopolitical disparities and unequal power relations that frame interactions within and between countries and their populations [25]. Geographies of development matter;populations are heterogeneous differing along wealth, ethnic and religious lines, and face different types and magnitudes of social-ecological challenges. [...]communities, countries and regions are not all starting from the same position, nor do they have the same technical, physical, financial, human, and natural capital endowments or capacities. There also remains limited empirical evidence of the efficacy of community-based natural resource management and multistakeholder platforms, gendered considerations of international climate financing initiatives, governing green infrastructure in peri-urban systems, and appropriate policy responses to human security implications of resource constraints under climate change.

ABSTRACT

Based on provincial panel data for the past 15 years in China, the SBM-ML index method was used to measure agricultural productivity under the environmental-constraint perspective with agricultural surface source pollution as the non-desired output. A dynamic panel regression model was used to empirically analyze the factors influencing agricultural productivity to provide a reference for formulating policies to alleviate the conflict between economic development and environmental pollution. The results show that the green total factor productivity of Chinese agriculture exhibits a slow, incremental trend year by year. The growth of green total factor productivity in agriculture mainly comes from the increase in the rate of green technological progress. In terms of geographical disparity, the eastern, central, and western regions show a high-to-low gradient of agricultural green total factor productivity. Agricultural green total factor productivity showed a significant positive spatial correlation in some years. As for the influencing factors, foreign trade in agricultural products is conducive to enhancing green total factor productivity in agriculture, whereas foreign direct investment in agriculture and agricultural technology input inhibit the growth of green total factor productivity in agriculture. This research also found a significant U-shaped relationship between environmental management inputs and green total factor productivity in agriculture. Accordingly, suggestions are provided to optimize the international trade structure of agricultural products, selectively introduce high-quality green foreign investment projects, drive the efficiency of R&D investment through digital technology, and increase investment in special funds for agricultural pollution control.

ABSTRACT

Urban green spaces provide environmental, economic, societal and health benefits to cities. However, policy and planning interventions aiming to improve usage have often led to unintended consequences, including, in some circumstances, an actual decline in usage. Previous research has identified factors influencing the use of urban green space, more often with a focus on the ‘quality’ and physical features of the space, rather than on the broader social factors. This study aims to unpack the complexity of factors that influence the use of urban green space through the application of Systems Thinking. A qualitative mixed-method approach integrating System Dynamics with rapid ethnography was adopted to elicit the views of local residents in Thamesmead, London. A thematic analysis of interviews was undertaken to systematically map the causal relations between factors, which were compared to wider stakeholders’ views. Our findings highlight the relevance of dynamics and social influences on the use of green space, which include social interactions and stewardship, health conditions, availability of services and amenities. These are factors that are underexplored in the literature and, sometimes, overlooked in urban green space policy by decision-makers. We infer that attendance of urban green spaces requires time, which may be occupied in other practices determined by local conditions and needs. Expanding the spatial and temporal boundaries of investigation, wider than debates on ‘quality’, should, in our view, increase the chances of identifying critical influences and foster an increased use of green space.

ABSTRACT

In recent times, there has been an indisputable need to move towards a more sustainable economy, known as a circular economy, which is basically aimed at reducing the consumption of newly extracted raw materials to manufacture products, and thus, reduces waste generation by recycling products beyond their useful life to ultimately close the economic flow of the product. For the economy generated by products to close the circle, it is essential to tackle the problem at the source, that is, the process to achieve the desired product should be conducted by designing the product with environmental criteria (eco-design) and analysing its life cycle from the extraction process to the point when it ends its useful life (LCA). This article presents an ECO + LCA methodology that provides designers with an easy way of visualising the effect of their design decisions on the final environmental impact of the product. This methodology was tested on a case study of a conventional desk, with four alternative scenarios presented and an assessment of their final impact with a cradle-to-grave perspective. The final design obtained reduces the environmental impact by more than 30% and reduces costs by more than 11%.

ABSTRACT

In an urbanized world, the sustainability of cities will depend on their form and urban structure. In this sense, fabrics that are compact, dense, green, and suitable for non-motorized transport methods are more environmentally efficient. For the purpose of contributing new tools to the design, urban planning, and sustainability of nature in residential areas, this study characterizes the urban fabrics of six urban wetlands in the Latin American city of Concepción (Chile), which is known for its blue–green spaces. In a wetland city, we model urban patterns through spatial relationship using a statistical regression model (OLS—ordinary least squares) with the urban variables of density, distance, population, housing, highways, green areas, and building permits. Concepción shows predominantly low- to medium-density fabrics, and it is not integrated with the urban wetlands. In fact, it was observed that the residential areas do not take advantage of the blue–green spaces and that the urban fabrics do not favor proximity, with a transportation network that promotes the use of cars, leading to the wetlands being inaccessible and fragmented. However, as they are still surrounded by open spaces with abundant vegetation, there are highly feasible opportunities for the future development of blue–green infrastructure.
